With or Without Smoke

Hello and welcome back to another Forgotten Hope 2 update.

The end of another year is closing in upon us again, and as usual, the team at ModDB have opened their voting for this year's Mod of the Year contest. We'd really appreciate if you could head on over and vote for us in the first round, which closes this Friday.

Mod of the Year Awards

With that out of the way, we move on to our renders this week: the venerable Lebel rifle and the Mle 1916 incendiary smoke grenade.

In 1884 French chemist Paul Vieille finished work on Poudre B, a nitrocellulose based explosive that was suitable for use in firearms. The military advantage of this new smokeless powder was clear - not only was the problem with smoke obscuring the battlefield gone, but it was also 3 times more powerful than blackpowder and thus bullets could get smaller and faster. Two years of secret work would go into finding the optimum bullet diameter for the new powder, but the same opportunity was not extended to the cartridge or rifle. In January 1886, War Minister General Boulanger ordered that a working system had to be ready within a year.

Hampered by this accelerated development time, the only option was to fall back on existing technology. The new 8mm bullet was awkwardly fitted into an extremely necked down 11mm Gras cartridge case, and the rifle was adapted from the Mle 1885 Kropatschek Infantry rifle. The rifle bolt from the Mle 1874 Gras was adapted with a pair of front locking lugs to deal with the significantly higher firing pressures of the new powder, and the new rifle entered production the next year.

The following 6 years saw over 2 million rifles produced, with a minor design modification made in 1893. The last new rifles would be assembled during the First World War, with major rifle production moving over to the Berthier. Officially declared obsolete in 1920, the Lebel would continue to see updates into the 30's, and was still in wide usage in 1940. It was the preferred rifle for launching rifle grenades due to the relative weakness of the Berthier's single piece wooden stock, and was also the more common choice for mounting the APX21 telescope. Our Lebel was made by Seth Soldier.

This grenade consists of a smooth ovoid sheet metal case filled with 300g of white phosphorus. Upon detonation of the fuse the phosphorus would be thrown 15 to 20 metres, igniting on contact with the air and giving off distinctive white smoke. This smoke and incendiary grenade was made by Seth Soldier.

Hello and welcome back to another Forgotten Hope 2 update.

Today we would like to thank everyone who showed up to the Memoriam event. Today marks the last day of the event, and your last chance for a while to play on the event maps. Keep an eye out though, as they may be back in the future for other events.

As for our render, we turn to the skies above France and their most numerous fighter in May 1940.

In 1934, the French Air Force put out a request for modern single seat interceptor fighter. A number of manufacturers began to work on candidates, including Morane-Saulnier. To meet the requirements, they envisaged a low-wing mono-wing airframe, with a fully enclosed cockpit and variable pitch propeller. This was a departure from their usual commercial designs up to this point.

Headed by Paul-René Gauthier, the team had managed to put together the first prototype in time for a first flight in August 1935. This M.S.405 featured a fabric wrapped wooden tail with an aluminium frame fuselage covered in metal coated plywood. Testing of this prototype was slow, with the second airframe only flying in January 1937. Both examples were displayed at the 1935 Paris Airshow, and that year an order was placed for 16 pre-production examples. What would be the M.S.406 was finally put into wide scale production in late 1938.

At the outbreak of the war, the M.S.406 was the most numerous fighter in French service, and would fly a number of sorties during the Phoney War. Pilots liked the handling, but a number of problems began to emerge. The guns in the wings were prone to freezing and jamming, and compared to the faster Messerschmitt Bf 109 the armouring and armament were lacking. The invasion of France in May 1940 saw heavy losses in air combat and on the ground.

A number of aircraft were sold to Turkey, Switzerland and Finland. The latter two nations saw some sucess with the type, but generally the M.S.406 was withdrawn from service before the end of the war. Ours was made by Herc.

Forgotten Hope 2: In Memoriam

Hello and welcome back to another Forgotten Hope 2 update.

Today we have an unusual announcement: a special event to commemorate those developers that are no longer with us.

Forgotten Hope has been in development for more than 18 years at this point. Many developers have contributed to both FH0.7 and FH2 in these years. Sadly, some of those who shared our passion for this project have passed away. With the loss of chad509 and ArminAce in August 2021, the developer team sat down and decided on a special project: An event to honor those who are no longer with us.

The "Forgotten Hope 2: In Memoriam" event will take place on the 30th and 31st of October 2021!

With this event we will honor these developers and their contributions:

ArminAce

A founding member of the Forgotten Hope project and one of the most prolific and talented mappers for FH1. He was responsible for some of the most iconic and beloved maps, including Sector 318, The Storm 1944 and the ever popular Alpenfestung!

Chad509

Many of our weapon animations in FH2 were made by him. He was especially proud of his Bren animations, which will be preserved in future FH2 versions.

Engineer

As a weapons expert, he was responsible for many of the sounds in FH2. Whenever you reload your Lee-Enfield, fire the Drilling as an angry farmer or even just run around, shaking your gear, you are hearing his work.

Rad

Another original member from the FH1 days, he was one of the biggest influences on the development of the mod. Many of his BF1942 models were of such high quality that we still use them in FH2 today! He also dabbled in mapping, namely by making Adak island.

What could be a better way of remembering these legends than playing on some of the original FH1 maps, ported over to FH2 by various contributors? The event will include:

  • Adak Island

  • Foy

  • Breakthrough 1944

  • The Storm 1944

  • Valirisk

  • Battle Island

  • Kharkov Outskirts

  • Bombing the Reich

  • Alpenfestung

  • Desert Rose

  • Sector 318

But that's not all: The event maps will include a large number of new vehicles and weapons, including the CMP Pacific content, unreleased vehicles from official FH2 development and assets graciously provided by our friends from the FH:SW development team. Some of these you can see in the screenshots scattered throughout this announcement, others will remain a surprise...

The event files will be distributed through the normal FH2 launcher. We are looking forward to some amazing rounds of FH2 with players, testers and developers!

That's all for this week, but be sure to come back next time for another update. Until then, feel free to visit our Discord, our public forums, our Twitter, our subreddit, and/or Facebook pages to discuss this update and other news.
